Singer, model, song writer Robyn Rihanna Fenty or RI RI as she’s popularly known, hails from a small county parish in Barbados called St. Michael, born to her parents Monica and Ronald Fenty on 20th of February 1988. Her path to success was paved when she won a Beauty contest in her home town. A talented singer from childhood, Rihanna once performed the popular’ Hero’- Mariah Carey number in a school talent show and won accolades for this remarkable performance. She had also formed a music troupe with a couple of her classmates.
She was introduced to the famous Evan Rodgers while he was vacationing in Barbados. He fixed up an interview with Jay-Z of Def Jam records and Rihanna flew to the US little knowing that she was going to make it big in the music scene. She soon signed a contract with Def Jam and thus began her journey to the top at the young age of 16.
Her debut album released in 2005 was Music of the Sun which appeared in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 charts. The song ‘Pon de Replay’ from the album was a chartbuster right from the beginning. Her album sold 2 million copies worldwide and was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. There was no looking back for Rihanna who was touring Japan, bringing crowds to euphoria, along with Gwen Stefani. Her stupendous fame saw her on every magazine cover and she even landed her first film role in Bring It on Yet Again.
She cut her second album “A Girl like Me” in 2006 which turned platinum and in the same year brought out her US number one hit single “SOS”. The toe tapping numbers “Unfaithful” and “Break it off” made it to the top 10 of the Bill Board Hot 100 Top 10.
Her singing style is a blend of R&B and Caribbean music with tones of reggae and dancehall. She idolizes singers such as Mariah Carey and Madonna not to forget Beyonce Knowles.
Rihanna is proud of her Bajan Heritage and has been made the Ambassador for Culture and Youth of the country.
Rihanna released her third album “Girl Gone Bad” in June 2007. This album focused on creating a ‘sex symbol’ image for Rihanna and clambered to Number 2 position on the charts in the US while in UK, Japan, Brazil, Ireland and a few other countries, it topped the charts. It contained a number of dance pop numbers along with a few soulful ones too. It produced 8 hit singles and included the world wide number one hit- ‘Umbrella’ featuring Jay-Z.
Rihanna’s fame raised her to the same level as Beyonce Knowles sharing the position of giving the most number of hit singles in the last decade.
Unfortunately Rihanna was unable to perform in the 2009 Grammy Awards following an issue of domestic violence with boyfriend Chris Brown. It resulted in Brown facing assault charges and losing out on various endorsements.
She has been honored with a multitude of awards for her talent in Rock, Pop, R&B etc. some of which are Favorite Female Artist-Soul/R&B- American Music Awards, Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at 2008, Grammy awards and International Album of the year at Juno Awards. She has a record of winning around 60 awards from 112 nominations.
She has also endorsed a number of products starting with Secret Body Spray whose company sponsored her first tour. She also modeled for ‘Nike’ before her “SOS” launch. She has also a fragrance to her name from Iconic Fragrances, a company belonging to Jay-Z which will be launched in the summer of 2010.
Meanwhile Rihanna is also focusing on her acting carrier by taking classes and looks forward to her debut performance in ‘Personal Protection’.
She also contributes to a number of charitable causes like the ‘Believe Foundation’ to help terminally ill children. She has performed in Jay-Z’s Answer to call concert which was a tribute to the policemen and firefighters who lost their lives in the September 11 episode.
She is all set to launch her 2010 tour which is expected to be a worldwide event.
