Parker, Ian Biography

I was born in the coastal town of Irvine in Ayrshire, sw Scotland on the 26 November 1953. My parents were from farming and mining backgrounds and I lived on a farm though my early years.

I had a natural ability to play piano from very young age and started piano lessons when I was seven.

The sixties was a great time musically and pirate radio, radio Scotland and Caroline (North) opened everything up by playing all the new British and American stuff and my early influences were The Beatles, The Stones, Stax and Atlantic Soul.

When I was eleven, I played in the school rock band "Timor Mortis" playing Deep Purple, Cream and Black Sabbath covers etc.

Later formed a gigging band playing clubs and pubs. And was lucky enough to see some great bands at the Glasgow Apollo such as Traffic, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Cream, Yes, Ten Years After, and Family.

I fondly remember the Saturday lunchtime jazz sessions at the Crazy Daisy in Glasgow with free pie and peas. Wonderful!

Band Profile Back.. After obtaining D.R.S.A.M. qualifications at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow 1972-75 I felt the need to spread my wings and moved down to London where I played with the house band at the Hammersmith Palais. This led to me joining the Tom Robinson Band, recording the album TRB Two and tours of the UK, USA, Canada and Japan.

I was also doing lots of session and TV work, arranging and composing and even more touring with The Three Degrees and The Nolan Sisters traveling to the Far and Middle East.In the mid eighties the killer B's were formed touring the UK and I wrote and produced much of the original music.

It was throughout this time that I was also involved in providing the backing band for Percy Sledge, Del Shannon and the Chi-lites.

Towards the late eighties I joined Clannad recording several albums, Past Present, Anam, Banba, Lore, Landmarks - 2 of which won Grammy's and toured the UK, Ireland, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Canada.

The early nineties saw me touring with Elkie Brooks (UK), Killing Joke (UK/Europe) Joan Armatrading (UK, USA, South Africa). This was also the time I joined The Hollies and have since toured extensively with them worldwide.

In 1994/95 I composed, recorded and co-produced my solo album "Count The Waves" at Pelican Studios with Ray Stiles. Guesting were Tony Hicks and Alan Coates along with Alan's wife, Kim Goody.

Later in the nineties I composed and recorded "Celtic" a production album with Ray Stiles and Damien Jory for Extreme Music.

In 2004 I composed and recorded music for "Dominatrix Revisited" series on Granada for the Men and motors programme.

My musical taste very quite widely from - Amon Tobin, Nitin Sawhney, Boards of Canada, which is ambient music, chilled and a bit trancy but I also like the Beastie Boys.

Singers I love are KD Lang, Frank Sinatra, Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell and Steve Tyrell.

I also like smooth jazz like Joyce Cooling and Will Downing and modern classical composers like Lutoslawski, Penderecki, Debussy, Ravel and Wagner.

So, you can see that my influences are many and varied coming from all forms of music from Classical to Punk, from Jazz to Rap.
