Nash, Graham Biography

Whether as part of the musical British Invasion in the mid-1960s or as a member of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame group, CROSBY, STILLS & NASH, whether as a respected photographer and pioneer in digital imaging with Nash Editions or as a groundbreaking performance artist creating new dimensions of interactive, multimedia driven entertainment with his autobiographical piece, LifeSighs, Graham Nash is guided by a unique, acute sensitivity to the world around him. As a result, he continues to extend the leading edge of entertainment, art and social consciousness just as he has been doing for the past 30 years. For Nash, the world at large began to recognize his many gifts. In May 1997, he, along with band mates; David Crosby and Stephen Stills. was inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame as CROSBY, STILLS & NASH.

In accepting the honour, Nash was thrilled to be thought of in the same terms as the brilliant musicians who have already been inducted. However, he also acknowledges a sadness that his mother and father werent alive to share in his achievement. The importance of family cannot be understated for Nash and he is both a devoted husband and father. Married for 20 years, he and Susan have three children, Jackson, Will and Nile. Family is one of the major themes of LifeSighs, Nashs autobiographical multimedia performance piece which debuted in 1995 and which continues to evolve as a work in progress. In this dynamic show, which combines live storytelling and songs backed by a stunning, interactive display of imagery and animation, Nash demonstrates his vision, creativity and drive to set new standards for entertainment, as well as for its emerging delivery systems.

Born in Blackpool, England, in 1942, Nash began playing music with boyhood friend Allan Clarke at the age of fourteen. The two founded THE HOLLIES and achieved international success as part of the British Invasion in 1962. While on a US tour in early 1967, Nash had his first chance to sing informally with David Crosby and Stephen Stills. The experience was so remarkable that, within the year, Nash had quit the Hollies, moved to America and helped form CROSBY, STILLS & NASH, now in their 30th year of recording and performing together.

As a musician, Nash has sung and played on hundreds of recordings, performed in dozens of countries and has written over 200 songs, including such classic hits as Carrie Ann, On a Carousel, Teach Your Children, Our House, Marrakesh Express, Just a Song Before I Go and Wasted On the Way. As an artist coming of age in the revolutionary 1960s, Nash naturally became involved in the socio-political movements of the era. As a world citizen of unflagging optimism and as the father of three who has a personal interest in the conservation of the Earth, Nash has long been a political and environmental activist. During 1969-72 CSN played numerous antiwar benefits and, since that time, have aided such organizations as Live Aid, Greenpeace, and the Vietnam Veterans, among many others. Grahams three main interests as an activist remain the antinuclear movement, environmental protection and children.

Concurrent with his music, Nash has maintained a parallel career as photographer, collector, and partner in a digital fine art press, Nash Editions. This interest was inspired early on by his father, an amateur photographer who would develop and print his images before the wondering eyes of young Graham. Nash began to collect photographs in 1971 and, by 1990, his collection had grown to more than 2000 prints, including works by Diane Arbus, Weegee, Henri Cartier-Bresson and others. In that year Nash made the transition from private collector to museum patron with a sizable donation to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. At the same time, he made a large part of his collection available through auction at Sothebys and donated 250 camera lucida drawings by Sir John Herschel to the Getty Museum. (Even today, Nash continues to pursue photography and he always makes time in his tour schedule to go exploring with his camera.)

Since 1989, digital image processing and interactive multimedia have become an important focus of Nashs work. Nash Editions (with partner Mac Holbert) is a digital fine art press using Iris ink jet printers capable of producing high-resolution prints on a variety of museum-grade media. In addition to printing Nashs own work, the press serves many noted artists such as David Hockney, Francesco Clemente and Jamie Wyeth. Nash Editions also serves as the printer for another of Nashs projects: Manuscript Originals. These are limited-edition, fine-art quality prints of original lyrics to all-time classic songs handwritten and hand-illustrated by the artist, which includes the likes of Paul Williams, Jimmy Webb, Kenny Loggins, Jay Livingston, Randy Meisner, David Crosby and Nash, to name a few. In the past few years, Nash has been involved with collaborator, Rand Wetherwax, in the Nash digital studio, a multimedia production studio built around a network of Silicon Graphics and Macintosh computers, as well as digital audio recording systems. Since its inception, the studios emphasis has been on the integration of media and more sophisticated interactivity into live performance. Current developments include real-time, 3-D digital puppetry (CyberGraham), interactive performance control of digital media, and live networked performance via ISDN. All these elements are incorporated in the production on LifeSighs.

With so many interests, its not surprising that Nash is a very busy man. At the end of 1996, a collection of his personal photographs and selected pieces from Nash Editions were featured at a special exhibition at the prestigious Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio. In February, 1997, Nash received the Arts & Technology Medal and an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree for his groundbreaking work in bridging the arts and technology from the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT).

In June 1997, Nash debuted a new song, Half Your Angels (which was dedicated to the victims of the Oklahoma City bombing), on Riff! a program that helped launch The Microsoft Network. As part of the program, which was carried live on the internet, Nash spent an hour online, answering questions and chatting with fans.

In addition to his many other activities and following in the steps of Carlos Santana and the late Jerry Garcia, Nash also has been involved in creating a special guest room at the Hotel Triton in San Francisco. Opened in September, 1997, the Graham Nash suite features art, artefacts, words and images that highlight Nashs life and career, along with his own selection of comfortable, pleasant furnishings made of natural fabrics and environmentally friendly materials. Graham Nash is a man fundamentally tuned in to the world. Through his creative expression, whether in music, photography, art or social activism, he helps us understand our place in it. And, as long as we have his vision, music and imagery to guide us, we will no doubt find the harmony in our lives as well.
