Anderson, Carleen Biography

Herstory

In the summer of 1957, at the age of two months old, my birth fathers parents took me into their humble Houston, Texas abode, after my teenage parents went their separate ways. My paternal grandparents unconditional love and positive reinforcement laid the foundation for me to keep the faith, despite my circumstances.

The Elder Reverend David Anderson, (the first in our family to be born free, as his mother had been a child in the U.S. slavery regime), and my grandmother Alberta, raised me to be understanding and tolerant of human nature yet be mindful of those who choose to abuse my kindness. My skills in public speaking, solo vocals, choral harmonies, song writing and piano playing began in my grandfathers church.

In the 1960s and 70s, James Browns funky grooves, featured my mother, (stage name-Vicki Anderson, birth name Myra Barnes), and my stepfather, Bobby Byrd. At 17, I did my first Bobby Byrd tour. In 1989, I went on my 1st European tour with Bobby Byrd and the JB All Stars. In 2003, my one and only performance with my Godfather, James Brown, was impromptu, at Londons Royal Albert Hall.

Further musical variety was provided by listening to country and western gospel music on the radio at bedtime as a toddler. My fathers sister, my beloved Auntie Bettye Faye, was the lead soprano for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1968. At age 19, my 1st studio recording session with Johnny Winter, (Edgar Winters brother), led to other country and western sessions in Nashville, Tennessee. In the 1980s, I received several scholarships to study Classical and Jazz music at Los Angeles City College and the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

As a divorced single mother, I moved to England with my son in 1990 and joined the Young Disciples band, which won a Mercury Prize nomination in 1992 for our Road to Freedom album that included the dance floor hit, Apparently Nothin. My 1st solo album, True Spirit, was nominated for a Brit Award in 1995. My 2nd solo album in 1998 was co-produced with Paul Weller. In 1999 I went on a world wide tour to promote the album, Trunk Funk, the Best of the Brand New Heavies. In 2002, I began a dual career, teaching and performing music. As well as being an independent recording artist, I teach Vocal Master Classes exclusively at the Brighton & Bristol Institutes of Modern Music. Whilst the lead vocalist of the Brand New Heavies, I first met and worked with saxophonist, Ben Castle, son of famed trumpeter, Roy Castle. Along with keyboardist/producer, Mark Edwards, plus sound engineer, Colin Walker, in 2002, Ben and I completed the team for my first independently recorded album, Albertas GrandDaughter, followed by the Live DVD/CD Grace & Favours in 2003, then in 2005, the CD, Soul Providence. In 2004, EMI released a Best of Carleen Anderson album entitled, Up to Now. A short list of musicians I have performed with includes Johnny Cash, Incognito, Jocelyn Brown, Ocean Colour Scene, Courtney Pine, Dr. John, Chrissie Hynde, internationally reknowned violinist Nigel Kennedy, Jamie Cullum and luminous others. In 2007, I sang for and met HRH, the Queen of England.

In 2006, Cleo Laine and John Dankworth gave me encouraging praise for my performance with their band at their venue, the Stables that led to my current singing with the Ronnie Scotts All Stars jazz band which has inspired my new album to be fused with jazz, gospel, rock, blues and soul, as well as a bit of classical music.

I have found living in England since 1990 to be the perennial inspiration for the music I make, fusing the sounds of my Texas upbringing, with those of my young adulthood in Los Angeles. Over 30 years of composing, singing, writing, performing, recording, teaching, studying and learning, it is a privilege for which I am truly grateful to live my life by delivering musical interpretations and expressions. Let music be the food of life. CA
