SNOOP DOGG FEAT. THE-DREAM - Gangsta Luv

October 23rd, 2009

The Doggfather isn’t just another OG. With a rap sheet substantially longer than his discography, Calvin Broadus could safely be called a bail bonsdman’s dream who dabbles in hip-hop on the side. But there’s no denying that lovable mug–his mama’s called him “Snoopy” since he was a child–and his distinctive, cannabis-reeking flow. These Snoop Dogg uses to his considerable advantage, whether selling the porn films he directs, St. Ides malt liquor (we recommend the purple flavour!), or himself: “Malice ‘N Wonderland” is Snoop’s tenth collection of “Gangsta Luv”.

THE-DREAM - Sweat It Out

September 11th, 2009

the-dream-001
Between the ‘07 release of “Love/Hate” and 2009’s “Love vs. Money”, The-Dream’s dominance as a songwriter, producer and solo artist had not faded–Terius Nash was still all over radio, now as then. Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” and Mariah Carey’s “Touch My Body” crowned the top of the Hot 100 amidst a string of smaller successes that included Jamie Foxx’s “Just Like Me” (merely a Top 10!) and Usher’s “Trading Places”. “Love vs. Money” is heavier on the ballads than its predecessor, and the song most directly connected to “Love/Hate” is “Sweat It Out”, essentially a slow-jam version of “Playin’ In Her Hair”, sung just as sweetly: “She just got her hair did but you know I can’t stop this / I told you once we finish that I would get your sh*t fixed.”

FABOLOUS FEAT. THE-DREAM - Throw It In The Bag

August 7th, 2009

A concept album from a punch-line rapper is a dodgy proposition, so it’s fortunate that “Loso’s Way” strays off topic even more than Jay-Z’s “American Gangster”. Named after Fabolous’ own feature film–available in a limited-edition version of the album–”Loso’s Way” is inspired by the Al Pacino vehicle “Carlito’s Way”. But past a track named after the character “Pachanga” and a couple other references within the rhymes, this is actually a standard-issue Fabolous album, with big singles and plenty of laugh-out-loud lyrics. Like he says, jus’ “Throw It In The Bag”.

THE-DREAM FEAT. KANYE WEST - Walkin’ On The Moon

Singer/songwriter The-Dream was recently one of many top songwriters honored at the 26th Annual ASCAP Pop Music Awards in Hollywood. Top awards were given to Norway’s own hit songwriting duo Stargate (Mikkel Eriksen and Tor Hermansen) who scored the prestigious Songwriter of the Year Award, and Jesse McCartney and Ryan Tedder (of OneRepublic) who nabbed the Song of the Year Award for writing “Bleeding Love” (performed by Leona Lewis). Songwriting luminaries in the audience were actually treated to special performances by both Jesse McCartney and Ryan Tedder (with OneRepublic), as well as English songbird Natasha Bedingfield. The crowd also rocked out to an energetic few songs by Wyclef Jean, (who received the ASCAP Creative Voice Award that night and had the audience dancing at their tables), and Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, (who were honored with the ASCAP Founders Award). That’s an awful lot of talent in one small ballroom! (To say nothing of having to perform to a room full of the industry’s top talents). THE-DREAM - Rockin’ That Thang

May 1st, 2009

Over the past couple of years, The-Dream has become, as he repeatedly boasts on sophomore album “Love Vs. Money”, a “radio killa…R&B gorilla”. The Atlanta recording studio that the singer-songwriter shares with beat magician Tricky Stewart is a virtual hit factory, churning out inventive smashes for everyone from Rihanna (”Umbrella”) to Beyoncé (”Single Ladies”). But on his own joint, Terius Nash leaps into another league with 14 tracks of simultaneous avant-garde dance music and radio-friendly pop about sex: sex in VIP rooms, breakup sex, makeup sex. And in “Rockin’ That Thang”, sex “’til the first light of morning”. Which will require more than a few remixes, Max Methods is handling this one.

THE-DREAM FEAT. FABOLOUS, JUELZ SANTANA, RICK ROSS & LUDACRIS - Rockin’ That Thang

March 27th, 2009

The-Dream calls his upcoming ‘09 collection, “Love Vs. Money”, “like the first album”–last year’s “Love Hate” blockbuster–”on crack.” Indeed, “Rockin’ That Thang” is a cheap, addictive, dangerous high. This loquacious rap remix is a summit of rhyming talent, the mic passing from Fabolous to Juelz Santana to Rick Ross and finally Ludacris. East Coast reprazentin’!

THE-DREAM FEAT. MARIAH CAREY - My Love

March 6th, 2009

The-Dream’s big break came when he put together Rihanna’s international smash “Umbrella” in early ‘07. Several labels approached him to churn out hits for their artists, but only Def Jam ponied up a solo contract. By December of the same year, five of his songs were in the Top 30, only one of them credited to him as a performer! Four of these–Mary J. Blige’s “Just Fine”, J. Holiday’s “Suffocate” and “Bed”, and his own “Shawty Is Da Sh*!”–were on their way to the Top 5, and The-Dream still found time to dish out songs for a wide range of artists, including Sting, Puddle of Mudd, Mary J. Blige, Celine Dion and “Touch My Body” by Mariah Carey, who returns the favor on “My Love”.

THE-DREAM - Rockin’ That Thang

February 13th, 2009

“All of my records are singles”, says The-Dream, explaining his strategy for compiling a collection of tracks for an album. And when you’re rollin’ like The-Dream was after his best-selling debut, last year’s “Love Hate”, there ain’t much you need to change. He calls his upcoming ‘09 collection, “Love Vs. Money”, “like the first album on crack”. Indeed, “Rockin’ That Thang” is a cheap, addictive, dangerous high, closely following hit lead single “Let Me See The Booty”.

JAZMINE SULLIVAN FEAT. THE-DREAM - Bust Your Windows

December 5th, 2008

jazmine-sullivan-001
Jazmine Sullivan penned tracks for the likes of Beyoncé and Christina Milian while the marketing department at Jive Records failed for years to find a successful way to market their gospel-indebted, surprisingly mature vocal talent. Initially associated with the neo-soul movement of her Philadelphia, US, hometown (The Roots, Jill Scott), Sullivan has been granted second life by J Records. The orchestral backdrop to “Bust Your Windows” harnesses that prodigiously soulful voice to a commercial track.

THE-DREAM FEAT. FABOLOUS - I Luv Your Girl

August 8th, 2008

the-dream-001
The-Dream hooks up with rapper Fabolous for the remix of his hit track, “I Luv Your Girl”. The original version appears on The-Dream’s debut album, “Love Hate”. The artist who wrote “Umbrella” for Rihanna explained that his album has a distinct feel, saying: “It’s more of what I’m giving other people. It’s like the ’80s — it’s musical. I’m doing the ‘Umbrella’ routine to this whole album. All of my records are singles. The album is really visual as well. It appeals to all your senses, similar to ‘Thriller’.” Find more at www.myspace.com/thedreamteam.
