R. KELLY - Echo

December 8th, 2009

By now, listening to R. Kelly document his busy sex life is like listening to an old jazzman run through standards - exactly what you expect, but when he’s inspired it’s well worth your time. Given that Robert has maintained a relatively low profile since his 2008 acquittal on child pornography charges, “Untitled” is his least eventful album release in nearly a decade. It’s also one of his horniest. Kelly’s studio skills and uncommon tune sense shine through, however, which sometimes still surprises given that songs like “Echo” lend the impression the man rarely leaves his bed!

R. KELLY FEAT. KERI HILSON - Number One

October 9th, 2009

Being R. Kelly means not only never needing to say “I’m sorry” for multiple child-porn incidents; it means that you title your first single after going to trial for a video sex tape on which you urinate on a 14-year-old girl “Number One”. But it’s that unfettered ego that we love about our Robert: He can make us believe we can fly. He can also make us want to get peed on. Kelly reminds us from the first stream that it’s “sex that we’re havin’” on the freaky grinder “Number One”; by the time you get halfway into his joint, you realize its not only Keri Hilson that R. Kelly’s banging, but all the haters out there.

R. KELLY FEAT. OJ DA JUICEMAN - Supaman High

June 5th, 2009

Urban R&B producer/vocalist/multi-instrumentalist R. Kelly began recording at the tail end of the new jack swing era, yet he was able to keep much of its sound alive while remaining commercially successful. While he created a smooth, professional mixture of hip-hop beats, soul-man crooning, and funk, the most distinctive element of Kelly’s music is its explicit carnality. He was able to make songs like “Sex Me”, “Bump N’ Grind”, “Your Body’s Callin’”, and “Feelin’ On Yo Booty” into hits because his production was seductive enough to sell such blatant come-ons. Although a jury found Kelly not guilty last year of 14 counts of videotaping himself having sex with a minor, however, none of his last six singles, including “Supaman High”, has made a chart impression.

BEYONCE FEAT. R. KELLY - If I Were A Boy

December 12th, 2008

“I Am…Sasha Fierce”, Beyonce’s third solo studio album, is divided into two discs as a way to emphasize the singer’s distinct personalities. “Sasha” represents Beyonce’s stage persona, an embodiment of the outgoing, aggressive, on-stage Beyonce that doesn’t necessarily represent the “real” Beyonce. But the bolder set of songs lies on the “I Am…” half, the new Mrs. Knowles-Z (we can’t call her Bootylicious anymore) tearing up the ballad “If I Were A Boy” (social injustice angle, although freaky R. Kelly’s addition makes you wonder…) as the lead single.

KANYE WEST FEAT. R. KELLY & PHARIS - Love Lockdown

November 21st, 2008

“Love Lockdown” debuted during the finale of the 2008 MTV VMAs only 10 days after he wrote it, marks a drastic change for Kanye West, as it’s the first solo single to feature him singing. But fret not, as with pitch-challenged singers from Cher to Reba, the trusty Auto-Tune is there to right Kanye should he falter. If you like the new style you’re in luck, as West’s new album, “808s & Heartbreak”, features more robotic crooning than rapping throughout.

THE PUSSYCAT DOLLS FEAT. R. KELLY & POLOW DA DON - Out Of This Club

November 21st, 2008

US choreographer Robin Antin first knocked around the idea of an old-fashioned burlesque troupe with her friend, the actress Christina Applegate. During The Pussycat Dolls‘ mid-’90s nascence, numerous guest vocalists — including Applegate, Carmen Electra, and Gwen Stefani — performed a repertoire of ’50s and ’60s pop standards while dressed in period lingerie and pin-up costumes. A Playboy Magazine Pussycat pictorial in ‘99 gave Interscope Records’ Jimmy Iovine the brilliant idea to select former Eden’s Crush member Nicole Scherzinger as lead vocalist and turn The Pussycat Dolls into a pop group. “Out Of This Club”, co-written by R. Kelly, is off their second album, “Doll Domination”.

R. KELLY - Skin

August 29th, 2008

R. Kelly is following up his last single, “Hair Braider”, with “Skin”. Both tracks will appear on Kelly’s new album, “12 Play: 4th Quarter”, which is due out in the next few months. In other news, Kelly is once again embroiled in controversy. This time, R&B star Joe is accusing Kelly of putting pressure on Jive Records executives and radio stations to stop promoting his singles when they started getting attention. Joe said: “R. Kelly would make a call to the radio station or to the label and say, ‘Hey, this Joe record is too hot right now. Y’all need to pull that back.’ And they would oblige. He felt like they should pull back because he felt he was more important. And they did.” No comment from Kelly’s camp but stay tuned because the beef is about to start cooking! For more on R. Kelly’s album, go to www.r-kelly.com.
