MARIAH CAREY FEAT. NE-YO - Angels Cry

January 22nd, 2010

What does it sound like when “Angels Cry”? Hopefully not like Mariah Carey’s acceptance speech at the recent Palm Springs International Film Festival after winning the Breakthrough Actress award for her performance in “Precious”. Apparently too much bubbly turns Mimi into that freshman co-ed who just discovered wine coolers - that her roommate spiked with Nembutal. Carey had much to celebrate, of course, winning the award as a first-time actress. (No, we haven’t forgotten “Glitter”.) But Butterfly is an “Imperfect Angel”, which is why we love her.

NE-YO - Never Knew I Needed

October 30th, 2009

We all know the old story about “The Princess And The Frog”: “You’ve got me mixed up with some toad, lady,” says the frog. “I’ve never even had genital warts!” Wait, we now hear that Walt Disney’s upcoming 49th animated feature film is loosely based on E.D. Baker’s novel “The Frog Princess” and the Grimm Brothers’ “The Frog Prince”. Our apologies to the animation department, who after claiming that 2004’s “Home On The Range” would be the studio’s final 2D animated film have instead decided to revive Disney’s tradition of hand-drawn cartoons and Broadway-style musical storytelling. Ne-Yo provides “Never Knew I Needed”.

50 CENT FEAT. NE-YO - Baby By Me

September 25th, 2009

50-cent-3
Thug-lifer 50 Cent wants to sex you, ladies, a point made vividly clear in the rhymes of “Baby By Me”. His strategy for getting you into all those positions he details? “Have a baby by me,” he hollas. “Be a millionaire!” We’ve never tried that one, but there is precedent! In 1997, Fitty’s girlfriend Shaniqua Tompkins gave birth to a son, which the rapper said changed his life, adding, “I wanted to have the relationship with him that I didn’t have with my father.” The relationship with Shaniqua? Not so much. Tompkins sued 50 Cent for $50 million dollars, claiming he promised to take care of her for life–and lost. No contract, no contact, knowhatisayin?

NE-YO - Nobody

July 24th, 2009

Since breaking out as a songwriter with Mario’s “Let Me Love You” in 2004, Ne-Yo has been nothing if not consistent. Proving more Gene Kelly than R. Kelly–someone less concerned with sexed-up swagger than polished showmanship and substance–Yo’s been a constant presence on the R&B chart who probably could not devise a gimmick if his career depended upon it–unless you hold those uncanny Michael Jackson vocalisms he uses throughout songs like “Nobody” against him. We don’t, and speaking of whom, Ne-Yo recently confirmed that he had been contacted by producer Will.i.am to work on Jacko’s upcoming album before Michael’s untimely passing.

KERI HILSON FEAT. KANYE WEST AND NE-YO - Knock You Down

June 5th, 2009

“In A Perfect World…” might be Keri Hilson’s debut album, but it’s hardly the work of a record-biz newbie. As part of The Clutch, an Atlanta-based songwriting squad, Hilson spent the last few years penning hits for such A-list acts as Britney Spears and Mary J. Blige, and in 2007 she dominated Top-40 radio as the female voice on Timbaland’s smash “The Way I Are”. Hilson’s not shy about using her connections, either: “Knock You Down”, her disc’s fourth single, sports guest shots from Kanye West and Ne-Yo.

NE-YO - Part Of The List

May 15th, 2009

ne-yo
There’s a difference between a ladies’ man and a man who loves women, and R&B sensation Ne-Yo reps for the latter. The 28-year-old singer-songwriter says his latest collection of heartfelt love songs–”Year Of The Gentleman”, his third in as many years–is a tribute to the Rat Pack’s pressed-suit style, but it’s actually a concept album about what a great boyfriend he is. Sometimes things don’t work out, even for a swell date like Shaffer Smith (the name on Ne-Yo’s passport), so “Part Of The List” catalogs what he misses most about the lady who walked out of his life.

CHRISETTE MICHELE FEAT. NE-YO - What You Do

April 24th, 2009

In a very short time, R&B singer/songwriter Chrisette Michele shot from small-time performer to one of Def Jam’s most promising talents, purely based on her unique instrument–an effortlessly gorgeous and versatile singing voice colored with Billie Holiday-esque inflection. India.Arie spotted her at Manhattan’s Village Underground club and enlisted Michele to be her opening act in ‘06. By the end of the year, Def Jam brought Chrisette out in full force, allowing her to write and sing the hooks for Jay-Z’s “Lost Ones” and Nas’ “Can’t Forget About You”. “What You Do” is from her upcoming sophomore LP.

FLO RIDA FEAT. NE-YO - Be On You

April 17th, 2009

flo-rida-001
Although his second album’s title, “R.O.O.T.S.”, stands for “Route Of Overcoming The Struggle”, Florida US rapper Flo Rida could be accused of false advertising. This is hip-hop as if Nas never happened, a reversion to the poppy goofs of DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, or Kid ‘N Play with better skillz and beats. The only struggle referenced on the collection is in getting down some lucky lady’s pants. “Be On You” is a good example, with Ne-Yo egging on Flo as he rhymes “cheddar” with “hot as ever”.

NE-YO FEAT. JAMIE FOXX & FABOLOUS - She Got Her Own

April 3rd, 2009

ne-yo
R&B star Ne-Yo initially released the song “Miss Independent” on his CD “Year Of The Gentleman”. That single climbed all the way to the top of Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts. His new song, “She Got Her Own” (sometimes called “Miss Independent Part 2″) features Jamie Foxx and Fabolous. “She Got Her Own” is reportedly also part of Jamie Foxx’s new CD called “Intuition” and gets the remix treatment by Benja Styles.

NE-YO feat. JAMIE FOXX & FABOLOUS - She Got Her Own

Sartorial paragon Shaffer Chimere Smith goes by Ne-Yo when he’s behind the mic; the object of this tracks’ desire by “Miss Independent” because, among other attractive attributes, she has a job and credit line, and has never stolen anything but Ne-Yo’s heart. “She Got Her Own” is an official remix of that previous single, featuring Fabolous and Jamie Foxx, and will also be available on the Foxx’s new album, “Intuition”.
