MOBY - One Time We Lived

For a guy who made his name driving party people to ecstasy, US electronica figurehead Moby has always had a thing for the blues. Multi-Platinum career-highlight “Play” used them literally, grafting ancient samples into inviting techno grooves. His latest, “Wait For Me”, inhabits them spiritually, giving Moby’s melancholy streak room to brood and blossom, moodily lush arrangements glowing with Eno-esque analog warmth. “One Time We Lived” is off the record’s Deluxe Edition, which features a DVD and a bonus disc of ambient mixes.

MOBY - Pale Horses

On Moby’s ‘08 collection, “Last Night”, he took the opportunity to pay tribute to a number of ’80s dance music strains that have fallen so far out of fashion that they’ve recently returned, breaking out highly energized combinations of rollicking pianos, stabbing keyboards and random divas while mixing and matching rave, Hi-NRG and disco. The electronica maestro’s “Pale Horses”–from the upcoming “Wait For Me”–is the complete opposite, “a quieter, more melodic and more mournful record”, he describes in his rigorously updated blog (moby.com/journal).

MOBY - Into The Blue

“The creative impetus behind the record was a [film director] David Lynch speech,” says Moby of the June-slated “Wait For Me”. “Too often an artist’s creative output is judged by how well it accommodates the marketplace. In making this record I wanted to focus on making something that I loved, without really being concerned about how it might be received.” Lynch interviewed Moby about the album for his Internet channel (dlf.tv/2009/david-and-moby/) and directed the first single’s video. In the meantime, Mute cashes in with “Into The Blue” from Moby’s ‘95 “Everything Is Gone”.

Finding his greatest commercial success with the albums “Play” and “18″, which relied heavily on old Alan Lomax field recordings of anonymous folk and blues singers backed by chilled dance beats, recent music by the great-great-great-grandnephew of literary canon-delegate Herman Melville has revisited his uptempo techno roots, “probably as a result of all of the DJing I’ve been doing lately,” he states on his Moby.com blog. This version of “I Love To Move In Here” was remixed by Proxy.
