It was in Rap-Up magazine that producer Tricky Stewart first revealed that there will be a “Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel” remix album. The upcoming “Angels Advocate” is the second mix disc by American R&B/pop singer Mariah Carey, following “The Remixes” in ‘03. Lead single “Up Out My Face” is an album track that benefits from a feature by hot new ho-on-the-go Nicki Minaj.

MARIAH CAREY FEAT. NE-YO - Angels Cry

What does it sound like when “Angels Cry”? Hopefully not like Mariah Carey’s acceptance speech at the recent Palm Springs International Film Festival after winning the Breakthrough Actress award for her performance in “Precious”. Apparently too much bubbly turns Mimi into that freshman co-ed who just discovered wine coolers - that her roommate spiked with Nembutal. Carey had much to celebrate, of course, winning the award as a first-time actress. (No, we haven’t forgotten “Glitter”.) But Butterfly is an “Imperfect Angel”, which is why we love her.

MARIAH CAREY FEAT. OJ DA JUICEMAN, BIG BOI & GUCCI MANE - H.A.T.E.U.

Unlike many big-budget R&B-pop albums, including a few by Mariah Carey herself, “Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel” isn’t the product of a stable of producers and songwriters; it is almost entirely the work of The-Dream and Tricky Stewart, the team best known for their tracks for Rihanna. Certainly, echoes of “Umbrella” can be heard on “Memoirs”, just as there are elements of the gauzy “Touch My Body”, the pair’s previous single for Mariah. Even if it’s missing a breakout single, what the collection also lacks is the pandering, heavy-handed sexuality Carey has relied upon too heavily this decade. “H.A.T.E.U.” (despite some silly lyrics) feels age-appropriate in a way Mariah hasn’t in a long time, despite the efforts of OJ Da Juiceman, Big Boi and Gucci Mane.

MARIAH CAREY - I Want To Know What Love Is

October 23rd, 2009

US songbird Mariah Carey claims that the reason she chose to use three images of herself for the cover art of her upcoming “Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel” is because “there are a lot of different emotions and stories revealed on this album.” We think you’ll agree there are at least six things nicely revealed. Carey says that she included something in the collection for everybody, even though the general theme of the album is women’s empowerment. “It’s about overcoming things,” she explains. Clothes, for instance? The disc’s big ballad is a cover of Foreigner’s “I Want To Know What Love Is”, juiced in this mix to a tempo that’d make even Lou Gramm shake it.

MARIAH CAREY - Obsessed

Since her early ’00s “Glitter”/”Charmbracelet” nadir, pop diva Mariah Carey has been enjoying quite a resurgence: her “Emancipation Of Mimi” and “E=MC²” have spun off hit after hit, and Mariah’s breasts somehow keep magically getting bigger! Time to sit back and count her blessings? Not our Mimi! “She can’t take a loss,” says one of her upcoming disc’s myriad co-producer’s, The-Dream. “It’s basically like we’re trying to make a greatest hits album” from scratch. Butterfly claims that the thinly veiled Eminem diss “Obsessed” is “one of [her] favorite songs ever.”

MARIAH CAREY FEAT. TREY LORENZ - I’ll Be There

July 24th, 2009

At the last minute Mariah Carey added The Jackson 5’s “I’ll Be There” to her “MTV Unplugged” set after she was informed that acts on the show commonly performed at least one cover. Carey adapted Michael’s lead vocal into a romantic duet, with R&B singer Trey Lorenz taking Jermaine’s lines, and the version became a No. 1 single. It was only natural for Mariah and Lorenz to revisit the song at Michael Jackson’s worldwide-televised Los Angeles memorial.
