DAVID GUETTA FEAT. KID CUDI - Memories

March 3rd, 2010

It’s taken 20 years for David Guetta’s name to mean anything outside the dance world, but now seems to be his moment. His new album, “One Love”, produced by Guetta and sung by a parade of famous cronies - including rapper Kid Cudi on “Memories” - abounds with upbeat pop and electro-rap, virtually all of it too catchy for its own good. Guetta lets his vocalists dominate the tracks as he hovers in the background, adding a bit of house piano here, some interstellar bleeps there, a big groove everywhere.

SHAKIRA FEAT. KID CUDI - Did It Again

January 28th, 2010

“I want us thinking outside the box,” Colombian “roquera” Shakira tells a lover on her third English-language studio disc. And musically, at least, she succeeds throughout the wildly eclectic “She Wolf”, which bounces from Arabian-accented Neptunes-brand electro-funk (”Why Wait”) to Strokes-style garage rock (”Mon Amour”) to the lovably bonkers synth-pop title track. Kid Cudi gives Ms. Hips some English lessons on “Did It Again”. “I have [producers] create all of my ‘K’s and ‘R’s on the computer because I cannot say them with my accent,” she admits.

SHAKIRA FEAT. KID CUDI - Did It Again

January 26th, 2010

Colombian She-Wolf Shakira is well known for her barefoot moves, which are based on the art of Arabic bellydancing. Raised by a father of Lebanese heritage, the young Shakira learned traditional “raqs sharq” as a way to overcome her shyness, teaching herself techniques by trying to flip a coin with her belly. While we would pay good money to watch this, her powerful fiancĂ© might have other ideas: Antonio de la RĂșa is the eldest son of recently deposed Argentine ex-president Fernando and was a key member of his father’s “sushi set” of advisors. Que dangeroso!

MR HUDSON FEAT. KID CUDI - Everything Is Broken

November 27th, 2009

Some of Kanye West’s boundless ambition seems to have rubbed off on UK blue-eyed soul-pop musician Mr Hudson since the two met and started collaborating. For his sophomore disc, “Straight No Chaser”, “my mission was to make a pop record, but not a throwaway,” says Hudson, Christian name Ben. “My heroes are people like Bowie and Prince and Damon Albarn. Kanye threw down the gauntlet, [saying], ‘Let’s see if we can make you a pop star’. I was like, ‘Let’s have a go!’”

KID CUDI FEAT. MGMT & RATATAT - Pursuit Of Happiness

September 25th, 2009

Brooklyn’s Kid Cudi is a fascinating rapper, claimed by the backpackers for his work on Kanye West’s “808s & Heartbreak” but equally loved by the mash-up club kids who went ape for his “Day N Nite” single. When his long-promised “game-changer” debut finally arrived, it became obvious that Cudi had already changed the game. With a track list broken into five “acts”, “Man On The Moon: The End Of Day” is as conceptual as its name implies, a Pink Floyd-styled story where real-world pain mutates into sci-fi fantasy. And Cudi goes the extra mile for samples and collabs: “Pursuit Of Happiness” features vocals from neo-psychedelic poppers MGMT.

BLACK EYED PEAS FEAT. KID CUDI - Boom Boom Pow

June 26th, 2009

“‘Boom Boom Pow’ is not your typical first single,” says Fergie of Black Eyed Peas‘ first No. 1. “It’s basically kind of to the left. We’ve always been misfits, so it makes sense.” The single is part of a project Will.i.am conceived called The Energy Never Dies, after which the Peas named their new disc “The E.N.D.”. “It’s a diary of music that at any given time, depending on the inspiration, you can add to it,” the artist/producer/songwriter explains. KID CUDI FEAT. KOLLOSUS - Day ‘N’ Nite

May 15th, 2009

Kid Cudi’s still a little annoyed that his song is a hit. Pitbull, Jermaine Dupri, and Jim Jones all gave remixing “Day ‘N’ Night” a shot, but it was Italian DJ team Crookers who scored with their European-flavored mix. And it’s the source of a sore spot for Cudi (b. Scott Mescudi): “Kinda wack that somebody established with a big name has to jump on your record before muthaf***as start to feel it. That’s my problem with the game.” Playa, meet game: Yet another remix of the track, this one featuring ups from Kollosus Da 8th Wonda, teases Cudi’s debut LP, now slated for late summer.
