JAY-Z FEAT. RIHANNA, KANYE WEST & QWES - Run This Town

September 11th, 2009

Jay-Z’s “D.O.A. (Death Of Auto-Tune)” left the impression that “The Blueprint 3″ might be a grumpy-old-man diss album, but “Run This Town” sets the record straight. Thanks to a molten Rihanna chorus, it’s also as poppy as a punching bag, without compromising Jay’s fundamental hardness. As Jigga himself boasts, “We basically run this town. It’s myself, Rihanna and Kanye. It’s pretty much it.” The former CEO of Def Jam bought out the remainder of his contract with the label so he could release the new disc via media empire Live Nation.

DRAKE FEAT. EMINEM, LIL’ WAYNE AND KANYE WEST - Forever

September 11th, 2009

“More Than A Game” is documentary that follows the adventures and stresses of a high school basketball team as it works toward a national championship. This particular team happened to be the St. Vincent-St. Mary Irish, which just so happened to include one LeBron James, who was being promoted as a future NBA superstar while still 15. At just 18, of course, LeBron was selected as the No. 1 pick in the 2003 NBA draft and signed a US $90 million shoe contract with Nike before his first practice. Kristopher Belman’s documentary boasts a stellar soundtrack, including “Forever”, an all-star collab featuring Drake, Eminem, Lil’ Wayne and Kanye West.

BEYONCE FEAT. KANYE WEST - Ego

July 31st, 2009

beyonce-0019
“I want people to see the many sides of me,” Beyonce says by way of explaining the gimmick of releasing her “I Am…Sasha Fierce” album as two separate discs. Knowles’ manager/father Mathew adds, “Beyonce was adamant–and she has complete creative control. She felt she couldn’t mix the songs together.” But that left a lot of empty space on the two CDs, so the Deluxe Edition pads the original with unreleased tracks from the same sessions, including “Ego”.

MR HUDSON FEAT. KANYE WEST - Supernova

June 19th, 2009

kanye-west-2
Eclectic UK pop group Mr Hudson has a powerful advocate in US rapper and, recently, new wave crooner Kanye West. “I believe Mr Hudson has the potential to be bigger than me,” West is on record claiming, “to be one of the most important artists of his generation”. Kanye put his money where his mouth was by inviting Hudson (Christian name “Ben”) to sing and co-produce some tracks on his “808s & Heartbreak” album. Now he returns the favor by co-producing their second disc, “Straight No Chaser”.

KERI HILSON FEAT. KANYE WEST AND NE-YO - Knock You Down

June 5th, 2009

“In A Perfect World…” might be Keri Hilson’s debut album, but it’s hardly the work of a record-biz newbie. As part of The Clutch, an Atlanta-based songwriting squad, Hilson spent the last few years penning hits for such A-list acts as Britney Spears and Mary J. Blige, and in 2007 she dominated Top-40 radio as the female voice on Timbaland’s smash “The Way I Are”. Hilson’s not shy about using her connections, either: “Knock You Down”, her disc’s fourth single, sports guest shots from Kanye West and Ne-Yo.

RICK ROSS FEAT. KANYE WEST, T-PAIN & LIL’ WAYNE - Maybach Music 2

May 29th, 2009

kanye-west-31
Calling his third effort “Deeper Than Rap” is a risky move for Rick Ross, as it’s his first effort since being exposed as a former corrections officer–tantamount to treason in the gangsta game. But the rapper’s ability to steamroll over the listener’s preconceived notions is remarkable, and anyone willing to ignore Ross’ iffy street cred and narrow subject matter (money, women, victory, repeat) will find it a weekend-gangsta album done right. Boss of them all is “Maybach Music 2″, with T-Pain, Kanye West and Lil’ Wayne all in top form.

THE-DREAM FEAT. KANYE WEST - Walkin’ On The Moon

May 8th, 2009

kanye-west-3
Singer/songwriter The-Dream was recently one of many top songwriters honored at the 26th Annual ASCAP Pop Music Awards in Hollywood. Top awards were given to Norway’s own hit songwriting duo Stargate (Mikkel Eriksen and Tor Hermansen) who scored the prestigious Songwriter of the Year Award, and Jesse McCartney and Ryan Tedder (of OneRepublic) who nabbed the Song of the Year Award for writing “Bleeding Love” (performed by Leona Lewis). Songwriting luminaries in the audience were actually treated to special performances by both Jesse McCartney and Ryan Tedder (with OneRepublic), as well as English songbird Natasha Bedingfield. The crowd also rocked out to an energetic few songs by Wyclef Jean, (who received the ASCAP Creative Voice Award that night and had the audience dancing at their tables), and Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, (who were honored with the ASCAP Founders Award). That’s an awful lot of talent in one small ballroom! (To say nothing of having to perform to a room full of the industry’s top talents). For a complete list of awards, including the Top 5 most performed songs of 2008, be sure to visit www.ascap.com.

KANYE WEST FEAT. YOUNG JEEZY - Amazing

April 24th, 2009

kanye-west-2
Kanye West continues his dark-wave-influenced sonic death march up the charts with “Amazing”. Drawing inspiration from ’80s synth-pop icons such as Gary Numan and Tears For Fears, West found a friend in the sturdy Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer, the affordable ($1,000 US dollars in 1980!) drum machine that kept time for innumerable contemporary new wave, pop and R&B acts. Rock producer Jon Brion turned on Kanye to the idea that box rhythms can be used to evoke emotion, which West manipulated to produce a distorted, electronic effect he refers to as “heartbreak”. Hence the title of his latest album, “808s & Heartbreak”.

KANYE WEST FEAT. MR HUDSON - Paranoid

April 3rd, 2009

kanye-west-3
“808s & Heartbreak” is Kanye West’s superstar-freakout album: his “Low”, his “Trans”, his “Kid A”. The affably doofy Everydude talking shit on “The College Dropout” has all but disappeared. Even “Paranoid,” the closest thing to a club-jam on the disc, sounds creepy, its sticky French-house synths conjuring coke-fueled restlessness. Kanye’s recent Euro-dance influences take over, pushing his music into thrilling and unrecognizable new shapes while he does some more hatin’ on the non-celebrity ex that caused his Auto-Tuned malaise. Mr Hudson (given name “Ben”), from the London’s alterna-R&B The Library, enables.
