Able to rap, sing and write songs that have everyone from John Legend to Roots Manuva singing her praises, UK MC Estelle got her start in London’s renowned hip-hop record store, Deal Real. Fellow employees encouraged her to take a chance and get up on-stage; soon she was appearing in clubs with the likes of Manuva and Rodney P. Late in 2004 V2 released her debut album, “The 18th Day”, which made a splash in the UK. US R&B Legend announced that Estelle would be the first signee to his Homeschool label and dropped sophomore album “Shine” last spring. She hits him back on “No Other Love”.

RICK ROSS FEAT. JOHN LEGEND - Magnificent

March 27th, 2009

In possibly the greatest pantsing of a rap star since Flava Flav was revealed as a Rhodes scholar, Rick Ross–who takes his stage name from famous 1980s California drug trafficker “Freeway” Ricky Ross–not only was revealed by TheSmokingGun.com as never having been deeply involved in the narcotics underworld, essentially his entire persona and rapping topic, but he was also once employed as a prison corrections officer! Luckily Rick’s felon pose may soon be restored to legitimacy, as he recently assaulted YouTube entertainer DJ Vlad for asking about his time as The Man, an attack filmed by bystanders and posted on the Web. John Legend aids and abets “Magnificent”.

From management consultant to Grammy winner… singer/songwriter/pianist (and former management consultant) John Legend released his third studio album, “Evolver”, in late October 2008. On it, he collaborated with a number of today’s hot hip-hop and R&B stars, including Andre 3000 (on the smash first single “Green Light”), and his longtime friend Kanye West (on the new radio jam “It’s Over”). Let’s talk about sex baby? Says John Legend: “The other albums have been romantic and sensual, but this one is more overtly sexual. It’s not crass, though. It’s still consistent with my own approach to writing about sex and love.”

JOHN LEGEND - This Time

November 28th, 2008

Smoov R&B crooner — and Kanye West best-buddy — John Legend is nothing if not adventurous, and his latest album, “Evolver”, includes lite funk (”Green Light”, featuring Andre 3000), reggae (”No Other Love”, with Estelle), and a lush ballad based on a Dire Straits guitar sample. While the piano-dappled soul of “This Time” might be the sound that pays Legend’s bills, “Evolver” is a refreshing release in a world where accomplished R&B artists all-too-often take the safe route.

The American musical-comedy film, “Soul Men”, marks the last performances of funnyman Bernie Mac and R&B legend Isaac Hayes, who both died before the movie’s release. It’s also the last time you’ll be able to watch Samuel L. Jackson and Mac curse at each other with such uninhibited glee. Jackson and Mac play former soul-group back-up singers who haven’t spoken in 20 years. They decide to reunite for a benefit concert after the death of the group’s leader, played by John Legend. “I’m Your Puppet” is from the soundtrack.

JOHN LEGEND - If You’re Out There

Child prodigy John Stephens didn’t become a Legend until Kanye West signed him for the release of 2004’s “Solo Sessions Vol. 1: Live at the Knitting Factory”, but he quickly built an impressive argument for his stage name when his first studio album, “Get Lifted”, reached the Billboard Top 5 later that year and won three Grammies. A big Barrack Obama supporter, John performed “If You’re Out There”, off his upcoming third studio album “Evolver”, live during the August Democratic National Convention in Denver.
