CHRIS BROWN FEAT. ESTER DEAN - I Love U

December 16th, 2009

The jury is in, and with the possible exception of SPIN, which has no actual readership, critics don’t much care for Chris Brown’s follow-up to his star turn as a spousal abuser. Opinions range from “This album could not have been voiced by anyone but a delusional brat” to “Has pop ever produced a less sympathetic victim?” to “A simple sorry might have made a better song - at least made Brown a better guy.” “I Love U”, from the “Graffiti” Deluxe Edition bonus disc, is a typical Brown schmoover, but it’s a little hard to trust the source anymore.

CHRIS BROWN - This Christmas

December 3rd, 2009

How quickly things change. Twenty-four months ago, Chris Brown was an 18-year-old clean-cut cutie with a second album under his belt, “an admirably clean record unlikely to raise any fears from parents,” glossed About.com. He was coming off a show-stealing medley with rumored love interest Rihanna at that year’s MTV Awards, and his second feature film, “This Christmas”, was about to open with Brown in his first major role. Now the best he can hope is that his version of the 1971 Donny Hathaway title song will remind fans of the kinder, gentler Chris Brown - and that Rihanna quickly gets over her new avenging fembot assassin phase!

CHRIS BROWN - Crawl

November 6th, 2009

Rihanna has chosen to embrace the controversy of her violent altercation with ex Chris Brown earlier this year: Her new single, “Russian Roulette”, addresses a troubled relationship with upfront, ballistic imagery. Brown appears to be doing the same, but taking a more contrite angle given his role in the situation. The “Crawl” video features Chris begging stand-in Cassie for forgiveness. Another leaked title from the upcoming “Graffiti” collection is the track “Changed Man”, which peaked at No. 65 on the Billboard Hot R&B chart.

CHRIS BROWN FEAT. LIL’ WAYNE & SWIZZ BEATZ - I Can Transform Ya

October 16th, 2009

In Chris Brown’s first interview since pleading guilty to the felony assault of former girlfriend Rihanna, the singer’s mother leaped to his defence by discussing a household where she was regularly abused by Brown’s stepfather. Chris actually blamed the media for driving him and the Barbadian chanteuse apart, during the widespread media reports of the domestic violence case. On the music front, “I Can Transform Ya” is Brown’s first single since the incident, and his first since coming to the decision that “I want to be like how Prince and Michael [Jackson] were. They can cross over to any genre of music.”

ESTER DEAN FEAT. CHRIS BROWN - Drop It Low

September 25th, 2009

Droppin’ it low to introduce herself, this brand new single is from an up-and-coming singer/songwriter named Ester Dean. Signed to producer Polow Da Don’s Interscope-distributed Zone 4 imprint, Ester recently jumped on a popular “femix” of the bubbling jam from another hot newcomer, Jeremih’s “Birthday Sex”. Here she lets us know all about her best ass-et, and proves her down-and-dirty bonafide by being the first artist (and a female, no less!) willing to work with domestic batterer Chris Brown since his conviction.

“I look up in the sky and I wonder why / Why you had to go,” Chris Brown sings on this Michael Jackson tribute. “I know it’s better on the other side / You were chosen from the start.” After hearing the news of MJ’s untimely death, The Game went into the studio and created “Better On The Other Side”. On it Diddy testifies to Jacko’s influence (”You made the world dance”), and The Game reveals that Jackson helped end the feud between the rapper and 50 Cent: “First thing I did when I heard was call Puff / Cos him and Mike tried to stop the beef between us.” The Game says he’ll dedicate the upcoming “The R.E.D. Album” to Michael, as well.

LUDACRIS CO-STARRING CHRIS BROWN & SEAN GARRETT - What Them Girls Like

September 19th, 2008

Dirty South rapper Ludacris is educating the world about “What Them Girls Like”, alongside Chris Brown and Sean Garrett. The track is the first off Luda’s upcoming album “Theater Of The Mind”. In addition to his successful music career, Ludacris has been spending more and more time working on his acting repertoire. In his own words: “I can see a point where acting is my full-time job, really… I will always be involved in music, but it may be more behind the scenes, as a producer, I will always do that. But when I look at 10 years from now, I don’t think rapping is necessarily what I want to do when I’m in my 40s.”

NAS FEAT. CHRIS BROWN & THE GAME - Make The World Go Round

September 5th, 2008

Chris Brown and The Game give rapper Nas a hand on “Make The World Go Round”, the next single from Nas’ “Untitled” album. Asked why he chose to use his voice to project the world’s problems, Nas said: “The ones that say they don’t have a message and all that, they’re gangsters, man. Not everybody wants to have that responsibility. I tend to see things and I’ve always questioned things since I was young. And when I see things that are unjust, I react. I may be a little bit more extreme than a few of the other artists, that’s just who I am. I’m not a specialist on race matters. I just have an opinion, I just have an experience to talk about.” For the latest on Nas, go to www.myspace.com/nas.
