LADY GAGA FEAT. BEYONCE - Telephone

“Fear of suffocation”, says Lady Gaga of the inspiration behind her latest single. “Oh, and never being able to go out and enjoy myself.” Huh? After guesting on Beyonce’s “Video Phone”, Gaga gets B-Yo to hit her back on “Telephone”, a product of The Lady’s insane work ethic. “You don’t see pictures of me falling out of a club drunk,” she reminds us. “That’s because a whiskey and a half into it, I got to get back to work!” “Telephone” was written for Britney’s “Circus” album, but when the label rejected it, Gaga was “fine because I love the song and I get to perform it now”.

Lady Gaga (b. Stefani Germanotta) attributes much of her early success as a mainstream artist to her gay fans. Early in her career she had difficulty getting radio airplay and says, “The turning point for me was the gay community. I’ve got so many gay fans and they’re so loyal to me, they really lifted me up. It’s not an easy thing to create a fanbase.” Although she identifies herself as bisexual, Gaga has had to debunk an urban legend that she is in fact intersexual, although she understands the confusion. “At first it was very strange, but in a sense I portray myself in a very androgynous way.”

“I don’t want to sound presumptuous,” Lady Gaga presumptuously sounds, “but I’ve made it my goal to revolutionise pop music. The last revolution was launched by Madonna 25 years ago.” Time will only tell, but if the headline addiction, obsession with gay culture, and the shrinkage of her kickers are any judge, Gaga seems more interested in being Maddy than pushing pop’s envelope. “Telephone” may not sound as revolutionary on radio as, say, Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” or the mainstreaming of hip-hop–just to name two “revolutions” in pop’s past 25 –but hey, Alice Cooper lovers her, calling Gaga “terrific vaudeville”. Now that’s progress!

BEYONCE FEAT. LADY GAGA - Video Phone

You have given Beyonce millions for her third official solo release, “I Am…Sasha Fierce”. But Beyonce gives back. Exposed to social issues as a child by her father and manager, Mathew, she helped found Survivor Foundation for victims of Hurricane Katrina; co-wrote “Stand Up For Love”, the anthem of World Children’s Day, the annual 20 November event to raise awareness for children’s causes; and most recently Knowles teamed up with Show Your Helping Hand by encouraging fans to bring non-perishable groceries to her concerts. “Video Phone” is more about doin’ the nasty, but that’s just Sasha Fierce and Lady Gaga talking.

ALICIA KEYS FEAT. BEYONCE - Put It In A Love Song

January 15th, 2010

Is there room for great soul in a post-vocal world? Over the past 10 years, pop voices have gotten thinner and tinnier with Auto Tune and other production techniques. So where does that leave a singers like Alicia Keys, one of the most distinctive and powerful pair of lungs in the business? It’s different for Keys, because unlike, say, Mary J. Blige, she’s never made a drama out of self-doubt–her cocky assurance is part of her charisma, a grown-ass woman emoting with a grown-ass voice, full of low-register warmth and depth. You can’t blame a lady for trying on the latest thing. But “Put It In A Love Song”, a Beyonce-Swizz Beatz collabo, might as well be “Single Ladies 2: Put Another Ring On It”.

BEYONCE - Black Culture

Is Bootylicious going all indie-rock? “My sister [Solange] has put me on to bands like Of Montreal and some other different types of artists,” she told The Observer. “I would love to do something like that on my next album.” Meantime, as Beyonce finishes her current tour and preps that new disc, Billboard’s Female Artist Of The Decade plugs the leak of an unreleased song. Sampling Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough”, “Black Culture” shows Beyonce practicing restraint, her voice gliding easily over the Quincy Jones-produced melody without overpowering it.

BEYONCE - Silent Night

December 11th, 2009

Destiny’s Child’s 2001 holiday album, “8 Days Of Christmas”, is pretty much what you’d expect - divided equally between hip-hop-soul and smooth adult-contemporary pop directly targeted at crossover paradise. The title track recasts “12 Days Of Christmas” as a modern, commercialistic, sub-hip-hop rant. The tailor-made “Winter Paradise” works better, as does “A ‘DC’ Christmas Medley”. Then there’s a huge stretch in the middle that features individual members singing a carol apiece - “Silent Night” is Beyonce prepping her solo career.

BEYONCE - Broken-Hearted Girl

October 16th, 2009

beyonce-0011
Sasha Fierce, the titular alter-ego of Beyonce Knowles, was born during the making of the sexy video for B’s ‘03 hit single “Crazy In Love”. Her sensual, aggressive analog signifies Beyonce’s mindset when she’s on stage. But since both personas share the face of Mrs. Carter, the way you know the singer’s gettin’ her Sasha on is when she sports the titanium “roboglove” developed by New York-based jeweler Lorraine Schwartz. “Broken-Hearted Girl”, however, is the tale of a gloveless relationship from the “I Am…” disc of ballads.
