ALICIA KEYS FEAT. BEYONCE - Put It In A Love Song

January 15th, 2010

Is there room for great soul in a post-vocal world? Over the past 10 years, pop voices have gotten thinner and tinnier with Auto Tune and other production techniques. So where does that leave a singers like Alicia Keys, one of the most distinctive and powerful pair of lungs in the business? It’s different for Keys, because unlike, say, Mary J. Blige, she’s never made a drama out of self-doubt–her cocky assurance is part of her charisma, a grown-ass woman emoting with a grown-ass voice, full of low-register warmth and depth. You can’t blame a lady for trying on the latest thing. But “Put It In A Love Song”, a Beyonce-Swizz Beatz collabo, might as well be “Single Ladies 2: Put Another Ring On It”.

ALEJANDRO SANZ CON ALICIA KEYS - Looking For Paradise

December 31st, 2009

On “Paraiso Express”, his eighth studio album, Spanish pop singer Alejandro Sanz returns to the soft rock for which he’s best known, the sound that made Sanz the most commercially successful Spanish singer of all time. Collaborating with producer Tommy Torres, best known for his work with Ricardo Arjona, is a good fit for Sanz, who like Arjona is a talented singer/songwriter in need of a capable musical collaborator. Demonstrating the same willingness to break free of boundaries that Sanz showcased on his past couple albums, “Looking For Paradise”, featuring Alicia Keys, stands tall amid the other tracks, all of which are sung solo.

ALICIA KEYS - Empire State Of Mind (Part II) Broken Down

December 14th, 2009

“Empire State Of Mind” was Jay-Z’s anthemic ode to his New York City hometown, and he slotted in fellow NYC-native Alicia Keys for the chorus because, well, Jigga can’t sing. The Gold single was hailed as a highlight from Hova’s “The Blueprint 3″ joint. For her new disc “The Element Of Freedom”, Keys makes the track hers by further singing the City That Never Sleep’s virtues on this solo track. Which is nice of her, because as we all know New Yorkers tend to have an inferiority complex.

After recording her third studio album, “As I Am”, Alicia Keys began to “find the way to totally be myself and what that meant”. She describes the upcoming LP “The Element Of Freedom” as diverse, but noted that there is a “balance”. “One side is strong and one side is vulnerable,” she explains. “The way that the songs progress [on the album] are gonna take you on a natural high.” Keys will perform “Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart” and other songs from the disc at the Cayman Island Jazz Festival on 5 December.

JAY-Z & ALICIA KEYS - Empire State Of Mind

October 9th, 2009

When Jay-Z made a series out of his best album, 2001’s “The Blueprint”, it turned into a game of high expectations. Volume 1 was Jigga vital as he’d ever been, storming back to his hardcore roots. The follow-up–”The Gift & The Curse”–turned about face, a set of half-cocked crossovers bloated with guest features that obscured his Hova’s talents. “The Blueprint 3″ shows that the self-proclaimed King of New York (he “Run This Town”, and don’t forget it!) is also still the King of Crossover: “Empire State Of Mind” is an NYC flag-waver with plenty of landmark name-dropping that turns into an anthem with help from pop sophisticate Alicia Keys.

R&B dynamo Alicia Keys is world famous for her stirring vocals and delicate piano ballads, but she got her first show-biz taste in a walk-on part at age four on the US sitcom “The Cosby Show”. After the millions of records and multiple Grammys, Keys returned to acting with her big-screen debut as an assassin in the ‘06 action film “Smokin’ Aces” (trust us, you didn’t miss much). Now bitten, Keys and manager Jeff Robinson have signed a film production deal with Disney, and their first film will be a remake of the 1958 comedy “Bell, Book and Candle” (witches!). “Doesn’t Mean Anything” is off her upcoming fourth solo disc.

With the single “Another Way To Die”, Alicia teams up with American alternative rock band The White Stripes and lead guy Jack White. The single is the theme song to the upcoming James Bond flick “Quantum Of Solace” set to hit theaters on 29 October 2008.

ALICIA KEYS - Superwoman

July 18th, 2008

Alicia Keys has stated that her latest single, “Superwoman”, is her favorite track on her album, “As I Am”. The song has also received added publicity in the US, as it is the opening song on broadcasts of basketball games for the WNBA. Keys tried to send a message on the song’s video, saying: “It represents all kinds of superwomen and the exciting part is, not only am I able to be myself in the video, but I’m able to play all of these other women as well. The song is just very inspirational, because I wrote it when I really needed to hear some words that said to me that, even when you’re not perfect, you’re still a superwoman.” For the latest on Alicia Keys, check out www.aliciakeys.com.
