KAT DELUNA FEAT. AKON - Push Push

March 12th, 2010

kat-deluna-002
With four years of opera training behind her, it was clear that 19-year-old Kat DeLuna wasn’t signed in ‘07 merely on the basis of her looks (which are bodacious, BTW!). Her debut LP,”9 Lives”, featured credible streaks of dancehall, Latin pop, Euro-pop, modern R&B, freestyle, and yes, (albeit to a much lesser extent) opera, as well. DeLuna’s controlled exuberance, ability to adapt to numerous styles, and considerable vocal ability kept it all afloat, and she co-writes each of the disc’s tracks, including the hit “Whine Up”. The multi-talented Kat tries to take it to the next level a new “Push Push” from Akon.

AKON FEAT. KERI HILSON - Oh Africa

February 10th, 2010

akon-002
What do we really know about Senegalese-American international hitmaker Akon? Surprisingly little that can be verified, except that pretty much his entire persona is fabricated. And that whatever he touches turns to Gold records. At least his heart is in the right place for “Oh Africa”, his charity single to benefit underprivileged African youth and his third collab with Keri Hilson. The song was released as a digital download during the 52nd Grammy Awards, along with the video. The Soweto Gospel Choir and young singers from many countries are also featured on the single, as are the good people who bottle your Pepsi Cola. Don’t worry, though, Akon’s next slated single gets back to what he does best, “Takin’ It Off”.

MATISYAHU FEAT. AKON - One Day

February 4th, 2010

matisyahu-1
Break it down, and Matisyahu is “an American Hasidic Jewish reggae musician”, but the Brooklyn-based jam-rock rapper/singer formerly known as Matthew Paul Miller has something to offer discerning listeners who can get past the initial identity clusterf*ck. “Light” is his third album, and it shows signs that Matisyahu is honing his very specific craft. Skittering percussion, Middle Eastern strings, layered beatbox and bass synth (courtesy of Stephen McGregor, son of reggae legend Freddie) make a hip-hop hotbed for showcasing Matisyahu’s strongest material yet. The again, there’s “One Day”, a corny slice of roots-reggae Pollyannaism that’s pure Velveeta.

MADONNA FEAT. AKON - Celebration

January 14th, 2010

madonna-001
For Madonna’s third best-of package she recorded three new songs, two of which, including “Celebration”, were co-written and produced by chef-turned-trance DJ Paul Oakenfold (who even signed DJ Jazzy Jeff And The Fresh Prince and Salt-N-Pepa as an A&R man for Champion Records back in the day!). He describes the eurodance-y number as “lyrically classic Madonna with an edgy modern sound”, a modern sound that was slated for an Oakenfold solo album before Maddy rang him up looking for backing tracks. Akon crashes this remix.

CASSIE FEAT. AKON & LMFAO - Let’s Get Crazy

September 25th, 2009

cassie
“I rap, I sing, I do my R&B, and stuff that the girls will love,” Cassie Ventura said of her ‘06 self-titled debut collection. She even paid tribute to her Filipino roots by incorporating OPM sounds into some of the ballads and was rewarded with a worldwide hit with the steamy “Me&U”. After weathering rumors that she’d hooked up with label boss Diddy (false?), been dropped by Bad Boy (false!), and leaked nude photos of herself on the ‘Net for publicity (not so false), Cassie invites Akon and LMFAO to get a little four-way crazy to celebrate her sophomore joint, “Electro Love”.

KERI HILSON FEAT. AKON - Change Me

September 25th, 2009

keri-hilson-001
Two years ago Keri Hilson was the sweet-voiced singer on “The Way I Are”, the bizarro song that turned hip-hop producer Timbaland into a pop star in his own right–but she was almost lost in the mix. For her debut album, “In A Perfect World…”, Hilson is again clobbered on all sides by ornate production–largely by Timbaland and Polow Da Don–which favors texture and rhythm over melody or feeling. But Hilson’s inventive, approaching the beat from odd angles and picking unexpected moments to rhyme her sexy mixed messages. She also does much of her own vocal arranging. Which is good, because she has to prop up a comatose Akon on “Change Me”.

PITBULL FEAT. AKON - Shut It Down

September 18th, 2009

pitbull-1
On the mistitled “Rebelution”, rapper Pitbull takes a cue from his homeboy Flo Rida and dives headfirst into the lucrative world of ultra-slick Miami club-rap. The only stories of boat people found here are the kind about people who own yachts, and while the Cuban-American’s songs of freedom are sorely missed, nothing in the man’s back catalog could fill a dancefloor as quickly as the tech-house stunner “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)”. “Shut It Down” ups the ante with a turn from Akon.

DAVID GUETTA FEAT. AKON - Sexy Chick

August 28th, 2009

david-guetta-0011
The rare dance album that spotlights its vocalists as well as its beats, every one of the vocal collabs on French superstar DJ David Guetta’s new “One Love” is marked by an arresting hook. Notable among the guests who leave a stamp is Chris Willis, longtime vocal collaborator with whom Guetta has shared no less than seven Top 10s in Europe; recent Grammy-winner Estelle; various Black Eyed Peas; and “Sexy Bitch” Akon, who lends his Auto Tune to this beachy summer track.

FLO RIDA FEAT. AKON - Available

July 31st, 2009

flo-rida-001
You’ve already heard ”Right Round”, the radio behemoth from Sunshine State rapper Flo Rida (b. Tramar Dillard) that has already hit No. 1 on three continents. Indeed it would take a monk-like level of pop-culture abstinence to avoid the swaggering, bass-heavy anthem, improbably based on the 1984 camp classic ”You Spin Me Round” by rouged British dance-poppers Dead Or Alive. But Flo got his start with hip-hop mixtapes–the street-level, sample-and-go collaborative currency of the genre–and his second album “R.O.O.T.S.” is essentially a flossier version of the same. “Available” excerpts the SOS Band’s “Take Your Time (Do It Right)” and ices it with an Akon cameo.
