COLDPLAY - Strawberry Swing

July 31st, 2009

coldplay-2
“We’re slightly terrified about this record because we’ve thrown away all our tricks,” worried Coldplay singer Chris Martin prior to the release of “Viva La Vida “. At the behest of producer Brian Eno, Martin stopped ending every song with his elegiac falsetto and concentrated more on songs than the ecstatic riffs that propelled many of the group’s singles. Also new, a slight world-music influence in the songs, “Strawberry Swing” in particular revolving around Jonny Buckland’s Afro-pop guitar line.

BEYONCE FEAT. KANYE WEST - Ego

July 31st, 2009

beyonce-0019
“I want people to see the many sides of me,” Beyonce says by way of explaining the gimmick of releasing her “I Am…Sasha Fierce” album as two separate discs. Knowles’ manager/father Mathew adds, “Beyonce was adamant–and she has complete creative control. She felt she couldn’t mix the songs together.” But that left a lot of empty space on the two CDs, so the Deluxe Edition pads the original with unreleased tracks from the same sessions, including “Ego”.

LILY ALLEN - 22

July 31st, 2009

lily-allen-008
British pop tart Lily Allen claims “22″, a song about a female character who’s all washed up at 30, wasn’t intended to make her more elderly listeners depressed. “It’s more about girls that haven’t figured out what they want to do with themselves,” she explains. “Especially really pretty girls. They can rely on their looks to an extent: people will pay for their dinners and drinks and they don’t really have to think. And then suddenly it hits them that they’re not doing anything with their lives, and it’s too late.”

CALVIN HARRIS - Ready For The Weekend

July 31st, 2009

Favoring a naughty schoolboy look that makes him seem even younger than his already tender years (22 when “I Created Disco” was released in ‘07), Scottish artist, producer and remixer Calvin Harris has a similarly youthful and forward-looking approach to his music. His new disc is titled “Ready For The Weekend” and features the single of the same name. “The hook’s sung by a woman called Mary Pearce,” Harris comments. “She’s got this great big voice and it’s like a nod to an old dance classic. I love underground dance music, but I also have an extreme love of commercial dance music.”

KELLY CLARKSON - Already Gone

July 31st, 2009

kelly-clarkson-003
If original American Idol Kelly Clarkson’s first album (”Thankful”) was the Obligation, her second (”Breakaway”) the Breakthrough, and her third (”My December”) the Backlash, then “All I Ever Wanted” plays out as Ms. Clarkson’s Concession. Back are the Swedish writers and producers and their laser-guided arrangements, and OneRepublic mousse-jockey Ryan Tedder supplies the murkey ballad “Already Gone”.

SIMPLE MINDS - Stars Will Lead The Way

July 31st, 2009

simple-minds-004
It’s easy to forget that 20 years ago Simple Minds were level pegging with U2 in the globally successful Celtic rocker stakes. In 1991, however, U2 released “Achtung Baby” and spent the rest of the ’90s playfully subverting stadium rock and injected their sound with the electronic thrill of contemporary dance music. Simple Minds dropped the earnest folk-flavoured chart-topper, “Belfast Child”, and slid from view. What they didn’t do was split up. The new album “Graffiti Soul”–the band’s first UK Top 10 in 15 years–harkens back sonically to the period immediately prior to the global superstardom the group achieved when “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” appeared in the film “The Breakfast Club”.

MAXÏMO PARK - Questing, Not Coasting

July 31st, 2009

maximo-park-001
Maxïmo Park haven’t quite followed the same tragic three-album arc as fellow UK post-punk revivalists like Bloc Party or Futureheads. Sure, their creative zest has also buckled under the pressure of success and pristine production, but of all the “angular” sediment the Franz Ferdinand tidal wave brought with it, the always underrated Maxïmo Park felt most like a diamond in the rough. “Quicken The Heart”’s best moments, like “Questing, Not Coasting”, are shoved to the back of the record.

MARIAH CAREY - Obsessed

July 31st, 2009

mariah-carey-182
Since her early ’00s “Glitter”/”Charmbracelet” nadir, pop diva Mariah Carey has been enjoying quite a resurgence: her “Emancipation Of Mimi” and “E=MC²” have spun off hit after hit, and Mariah’s breasts somehow keep magically getting bigger! Time to sit back and count her blessings? Not our Mimi! “She can’t take a loss,” says one of her upcoming disc’s myriad co-producer’s, The-Dream. “It’s basically like we’re trying to make a greatest hits album” from scratch. Butterfly claims that the thinly veiled Eminem diss “Obsessed” is “one of [her] favorite songs ever.”

NOUVELLE VAGUE FEAT. MARTIN GORE - Master & Servant

July 31st, 2009

nouvelle-vague
Nouvelle Vague is a French musical collective led by Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux. Their name is a play on “new wave”, referring simultaneously to their “Frenchness” (the ’60s new wave of cult French cinema), the source of their songs (covers of US/British new wave-era hits), and their exclusive use of ’60s bossa nova-style arrangements (”bossa nova” being Portuguese for “new wave”). Tres habile, no? Their newest album, “Bande à Part” (une autre référence cinématographique!), includes Gilberto-ized versions of songs by Buzzcocks, New Order and Martin Gore helping out on his band Depeche Mode’s “Master & Servant”.

THE USED - Blood On My Hands

July 31st, 2009

the-used-001
The members of The Used overcame poverty, homelessness and substance abuse–not to mention the straight-laced Mormon attitudes of their Utah hometown–to bring their screamo-tinged brand of post-hardcore to life. But they persevered and earned a contract with Reprise Records, releasing their self-titled debut album in 2002. Having only played a handful of shows prior to the record’s release, The Used began relentless nationwide touring that quickly saw their fan base multiply. Club dates soon turned into larger-scale festival/package tours including Warped Tour, Ozzfest and Projekt Revolution alongside Linkin Park and Snoop Dogg. “Blood On My Hands” is from the new disc “Artwork”.
